Ten Simple Stretch Marks Treatment

by Sansey

Stretch marks occur due to weight gain, rapid weight loss and pregnancy. All these situations result in rapid changes to body shape, which in turn affects your skin.

Stretch marks have a very ugly appearance and start off with a reddish or purplish colour, which later turns into a glossy look with steaks of silver or white.

Stretch marks arise when the level of glucocorticoids increases throughout the bloodstream. The adrenal glands secrete this hormone and its level at times of pregnancy obesity, weight loss, weight lifting and Cushing's syndrome is high. Some medical terms used for stretch marks are vergetures, striae cutis distensae lineae atrophicae, striae distensae and linea albicante.

It's very embarrassing when stretch marks start appearing. Skin which was normal looking and glowing now looks ugly and very unsightly, which can be emotionally distressing as well. However, nature has put forth some cures for this problem. Here are a few tips on how you can remove stretch marks, using home-made mixes, pastes or changing your diet:

* Massage the area with stretch marks using either cod liver oil, olive oil, vitamin E oil or flaxseed oil.

* Regularly doing exercises will tone your body and reduce stretch marks because it's when your skin become loose or stretches that stretch marks start appearing.

* An age old remedy for removing stretch marks is applying some cocoa butter on them.

* If you are not eating the right foods, you can get stretch marks because your body is not getting the right nutrients. Make changes in your eating habits so that you have a balanced meal and your body get the nutrition it requires.

* Taking too much caffeine or tea can make your skin more susceptible to stretch marks. Reduce the intake and increase your consumption of water.

* Using oils containing Vitamin E or olive oil can reduce stretch marks and even prevent them from occurring, by providing the skin with nourishment and increasing elasticity.

* Buy creams containing collagen as they help to fight off stretch marks.

* Applying lavender oil on the areas with stretch marks can help to remove them.

* Use an apricot scrub on the area affected by stretch marks and you will see them to disappear in a short while.

Doing the above-mentioned steps will help you to remove stretch marks naturally. You do not have to spend money buying lotions or in doing surgery. Neither do you have to go through the trouble of finding a skin specialist or a beauty salon for finding a cure to this problem.

Natural remedies for removing stretch marks are painless and all that is needed is a few minutes of your time every day for a period of three to six months to see full effects.

Anti Aging Secrets - How Does A Wrinkle Cream Work?

by Janice Tham

Long before stores were stocked with beauty creams, even during ancient civilizations, anti aging skin care already existed.

Egyptian queens were said to bathe in goats milk. The earliest Egyptian graves held more than the remains of their occupants. People were buried with things they hoped to bring with them after death. Graves of ancient Egyptian queens also held their kohl tubes, jars of oil for their bodies and unguent pots containing their beauty creams.

Every culture has its own traditional beauty recipes, passed from mother to child. Before the commercial beauty cream was available, women would make their own beauty treatments in the kitchen. It was through such recipes, with the help of chemists that cosmetics industry was born. Entrepreneurs would concoct their own creams based on family beauty recipes and with the help of chemists or with the knowledge of chemistry, develop beauty creams with a long enough shelf life to sell to the masses.

Anita Roddick started The Body Shop in 1976 where she developed skin care, cosmetics and makeup based on the beauty recipes she discovered on her travels as a teacher for the United Nations.

A moisturizer is typically an emulsion of water and oil, stabilized by lecithin, beeswax or some other emulsifier. When you apply a moisturizer on the skin, it forms a layer over your skin, locking in the moisture in your skin, making skin appear smoother and better looking. In the past, women might even rub butter, milk or even vegetable oil (scented with flowers or herbs) over their skin to relieve dryness. Egg whites or honey were often used as face masks.

Today's modern anti wrinkle creams go beyond traditional recipes. Many are developed in the laboratory with much research and patented formulas or ingredients. Claims that had to be a con job several decades back are plausible today.

These types of ingredients are used in today's wrinkle creams to combat the signs of aging.

1. Antioxidants

Now, free radicals are often blamed for the aging signs on our skin. The antidote? Antioxidants. The typical anti aging cream today would contains antioxidants in some form or other. Let me explain this.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that are missing an electron. They cause oxidization (loss of electrons) of the molecules they come in contact with. When free radicals come into contact with the cells in your body, they damage your cells at a molecular level. This damage is thought to be the cause of aging. Free radicals are produced in your body's normal functions. They are also introduced to the body through pollution, the UV rays of the sun and other environmental stresses.

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by donated extra electrons to them, thereby stabilizing these otherwise dangerous molecules. Most anti aging products would have antioxidants in some form or other to neutralize these free radicals.

Typically, vitamin C, Vitamin E, green tea, pycnogenol, CoQ10 and Lipoic Acid are the antioxidants commonly used as oxidants in anti aging creams. Idebenone, found in Elizabeth Arden's Prevage is probably the most potent antioxidant known at the moment. More about this at http://www.getyouthful.com/Prevage-MD.htm

2. Sunscreens

The best defence is a good offense. Since sunlight wreaks havoc on the skin, prematurely aging the skin and possibly causing skin cancer, the best thing you can do is to wear a sunscreen all day long. The smart day creams should contains some form of sunscreen built into them. Use one that has at least SPF 15. Although it wouldn't erase your existing lines, it would slow down the formation of new wrinkles.

Compare the women who sustained a sunkissed tan throughout their youth and the women who preferred the look of fair skin and dilligently carried parasols or stayed out of the sun. When they reach their forties onwards, the difference is stark. Those who tanned look much older than those who shied from the sun. Photoaging is one of the key causes of premature aging of the skin.

Exposure to sunlight causes collagen deep in your skin to break down at a higher than normal rate. 70% of your skin is made up of collagen. As the levels of collagen decreases, skin sags, lines appear and skin loses its firmness. All these are the visible signs associated with aging. Wearing a day cream with SPF15 or higher all day long protects your skin from such damage and prevents photoaging.

3. Collagen rebuilders.

Since the loss of collagen leads to saggy skin and wrinkles, if a cream can rebuild the skin's collagen, wouldn't that erase wrinkles?

That's the line of thought that fuels many anti wrinkle creams today.

This is where it gets very interesting. Many patents exist on new ingredients create to rebuild the skin from within. Lancome Absolue Premium boasts of a new lab created molecule, Pro-Xylane, that claims to act on every layer of the skin to redensify and restructure its matrix and rejuvenate the skin. More about this at http://www.getyouthful.com/Lancome-Absolue-Premium.htm.

Clinique repairwear contains type 1 collagen to firm your skin. Estee lauder advanced night repair range builds your skins hyaluronic acid stores and boosts collagen production. Many of this new generation of wrinkle creams tackle the problem by coaxing the skin to repair itself. These work from inside out, purportly levelling out the wrinkles.

Can facial exercises prevent wrinkles?

by Janet Martin

Looking for an inexpensive way to prevent wrinkles, crow's feet, and laugh lines that come with advancing age? Scared of getting Botox injections or going under the knife? The latest craze these days are facial exercises which will supposedly keep skin healthy and young.

Regular facial exercises, we are told, will improve muscle tone and blood circulation. Promoters say this, in turn, leads to improved collagen and elastin production, smaller pores due to balanced oil distribution, and removal of puffiness or excess fluids. When done half an hour everyday, facial exercises will reportedly minimize existing wrinkles and prevent potential ones from forming.

The exercises are easy to perform and can be done in front of a mirror at home. Since they can make you look ridiculous, you are advised to keep your door locked. One exercise involves chewing with your lips closed while sitting and looking at the ceiling. Another exercise you can do while sitting is to keep your lips together and drop your jaw while pushing it forward. Or you can push your lips forward as far as possible to form an exaggerated "O" with your mouth then smile as brightly as you can. Do this alternately for about 10 seconds.

Dermatologists said facial exercises have their rightful place in medicine. Because of their ability to stimulate blood flow and circulation, these exercises are typically used to relieve tension and prepare the skin for treatment. They can help facilitate lymphatic drainage and remove excess lymph fluid that contains dirt and debris.

"Facial exercise is often used by estheticians and registered nurses prior to facials, microdermabrasion, and chemical peel treatments. Doctors may recommend facial exercise to treat certain medical conditions such as TMJ Pain Syndrome. TMJ is characterized by faulty movement of the temporomandibular joint and produces facial pain, headaches, and other uncomfortable symptoms," explained Linda Nelson, Skin Authority national technical director.

"Facial exercise is often performed by moving the pads of the fingers in an upward, outward motion over different areas of the face. Practitioners may massage areas or slightly pinch around the brow where facial tension is concentrated. They may massage along the jaw line or at the hinges of the jaw and cheekbone to help manage TMJ," Nelson added.

But the jury is still out on exercises that are done at home which experts consider questionable. For one, facial muscles are different from other muscles in the body and don't respond to exercise by growing bigger or becoming more toned. If facial exercises really worked, dermatologists said we should all have big plump faces now from talking, smiling, blinking, and eating.

Secondly, rather than prevent wrinkles, these exercises could create more wrinkles and sagging skin because of their inappropriate downward movements. Dermatologists said they may also deepen existing lines by forcing the face into unnatural expressions. If you really want to prevent wrinkles, you don't have to look silly in front of a mirror. Instead follow these practical tips:

"Experts suggest avoiding these common wrinkle-causing habits: squinting (wear sunglasses whenever glare is strong), sipping through a straw (encourages lip lines), scrubbing your face vigorously while cleansing, and leaning your chin or cheek on your hand or the telephone," said WDStyle.

One popular product than can reduce wrinkles better than facial exercises is Dermaxin. This powerful cream has a quick penetrating action to help repair and revitalize your skin. Its active ingredients can significantly diminish fine lines and wrinkles. For details, go to http://www.dermaxin.com.

Wrinkle Removal - Medical Treatment of Wrinkles

by Franchis Adam

Although wrinkles can signify wisdom, most people nowadays would rather not have them. Skin wrinkles typically appear as a result of aging processes such as glycation or, temporarily, as the result of prolonged (more than a few minutes) immersion in water. Wrinkling in skin is caused by habitual facial expressions, aging, sun damage, smoking, poor hydration, and various other factors.

Many products and procedures promise to reduce wrinkles. Some do little or nothing (like the products that claim they reduce "the appearance of fine lines," which means that they don't reduce the lines themselves). Others can achieve a fair amount of success.

Be wise - moisturize. One cause of wrinkling is dry skin. Therefore, it makes sense to moisturize the skin. This can hide smaller wrinkles. Drinking plenty of water is also a good idea.

Stop smoking. We all know about the dangers of smoking but did you know that this bad habit can also contribute to wrinkles? Doctors say smoking causes premature wrinkles in the mouth due to constant puckering. It also interferes with the blood supply in that area that could aggravate wrinkling.

Stay away from straws. Sipping your favorite drink with a straw can make you look glamorous but it has the same effect as smoking and can cause wrinkles. To prevent this, drink directly from the bottle, can or glass. Don't let the drink linger in your mouth. Drinking water afterwards can reduce your chances of tooth decay due to the acids found in colas, non-colas, and tea drinks.

"Sucking up your drinks through a straw makes you purse your lips over and over (as if smoking a cigarette) and can bring on wrinkles. It doesn't help your teeth much either. Drinking sugary drinks through a straw may save decay on your front teeth but the back ones will be badly affected," said Bella Battle in the Sun Woman Online.

Sleep right. Burning the midnight candle can make you look old so it's important to get enough sleep. However, the way you sleep can also affect your appearance. To avoid sleep wrinkles, sleep on your back and keep pillows away from your face. Pressing your face into a pillow whenever you sleep can give you wrinkles. If you can't avoid this, use a softer pillow made of silk instead of one made of cotton.

"You know those facial creases you wake up with from sleeping on your side? They could be permanent. Regularly subjecting one side of your face to such pressure can lead to wrinkles that don't budge. Sleep on your back with your face in the air to avoid puffy eyes and a lined face," Battle said.

Put on a happy face. While the link between stress and wrinkles is not clear, experience has shown us that the former can make us look older. Unhappiness, loneliness, anxiety, and depression are major stressors that can make or break you. Problems can't be avoided but learn to live with them and you'll feel much better. It will show on your face too.

Here are some things people can do to prevent getting many wrinkles at an early age:

# Don't go to the tanning salon. The UV light from tanning booths is just as damaging as the sun's - and sometimes worse. # Don't smoke! Smoking robs your skin of precious moisture and causes premature (early) wrinkles. (Did you ever notice that most heavy smokers have wrinkles around their mouths?)
